About the Creator

Richard Wright is an artist and researcher working in the fields of animated media, digital moving image and networked interaction. Over the last twenty years his work has been exhibited and screened at numerous festivals and exhibitions and broadcast by television channels around the world. In 1998 he received a PhD in the aesthetics of digital film making and has published nearly forty book chapters, articles and reviews.

During the 1990s, Richard pioneered digital animation as a distinctive artistic form in films ('Heliocentrum', 1995, 'LMX' Spiral, 1998 and 'Foreplay' 2004). Richard’s moving image work has expanded into various interactive and online media such as 'Play to Win' (1997), one of the first interactive TV commissions and the online screensaver 'The Bank of Time' which was nominated for a BAFTA award in 2001 (theBankofTime.com). His most recently completed online project was 'The Mimeticon' (2006) – both a search engine that finds images by visual similarity and an artwork about the visual history of writing (mimeticon.net).

Since 2004 he has been a core member of the pioneering media arts group Mongrel, which set up the MediaShed in Southend-on-Sea. As their Research Director he has been responsible for setting up their highly successful 'Social Telephony' work and arts led regeneration programmes (mongrel.org.uk).

Richard is currently working on a “decorative surveillance” project to turn a public space into a masquerade and 'Cross Talk' – a project to use the ecosystem as a communications network between humans and non-humans.
